Alex Armstrong

Alex is the director and principal teacher at FlowYoga.
Alex has performed practical research into yoga, the martial arts, triathlon, gymnastics, and many other movement systems since an early age. He is a qualified exercise physiologist, and has been teaching yoga since 1993 and founded FlowYogaTM in 1998. He has worked extensively in the education, corporate, rehabilitation and elite athletic environment. He is priveledge to have had the opportunity to study with such incredible people. He teaches safely and effectively with care and integrity.
Yoga Training
Alex has completed formal training in the Iyengar method under the guidance of Senior Iyengar Yoga teacher John Leebold (1993). Alex has practiced the Ashtanga Vinyasa system of Yoga intensively for over 10 years receiving tuition from Monica Gaucci, Gregor Mahel, Dena, Graham Northfield and others. He has studied intensively the Shadow Yoga system as a personal student of Shandor Remete, as well as the Yoga Synergy system of Simon Borg-Olivier. He has hosted workshops for many leading international teachers including Shandor Remete, Emma Balnaves, Simon Borg-Olivier, and Phillip Stevens (Swami Sanyasananda).
Acedemic Achievements:
Alex completed a Bachelor of Economics at UWA in 1992. He then later went on to completed a Bachelor of Science (UWA) with first class honours majoring in Human Movement and Exercise Science in 1997. During this time he was awarded four major acedemic prizes including the Prestigious Lady James Prize in Natural Science (top graduate in all departments in the faculty of natural science), the G G Watson prize in Human Movement (top Human Movement 3rd year student, and the Rod Fry Prize in Human Movement (top honours graduate in his final year). He is currently completing a PhD (UWA) under the supervision of Assoc. Prof. Peter Arthur and Prof. Paul Forneir. This has required the developement of a biomolecular technique for the measurement of oxidation of muscle protein (thiols) from free radicals, and its application to muscle fatigue from exercise, muscular dystrophy and diabetes. This has been adapted for human medical research. Alex has had several papers published in top peer reveiwed journals.
Teaching to Elite Athletes and Sporting Teams
Alex has taught yoga to elite athletes and teams at the highest level. He has taught athletes from the WA Institute of Sport (WAIS) including Olymipic Gold Medalist and World Champion pole vaulter Steve Hooker, Commonwealth Games Silver medalist javeline thrower Kim Meikle, and many other national and international level athletes including Paul Burgess, Lana Boyd, Vicky and Liz Parnov, Jody Henry and Kylie Wheeler.
Alex also teaches the West Coast Eagles AFL football team.
Corporate Teaching
Alex has taught regular classes and presented workshops and presentations to large corporations such as, Argyle Diamonds, Rio Tinto, Main Roads, Minara Resources, Department of Transport, Philips Fox Legal and many others. Alex was the personal Yoga teacher for corporate magnate Danny Hill for many years.
Rehabilitation
Alex has worked for several years in the feild of exercise rehabilitation from motor vehicle accident, workers compensation, osetoporosis and sports injuries. He has worked at the University (UWA) Functional Rehabilitaion Programme, Body Active Consultancy, and has worked in combination with several private medical practices. He has been certified in Clinical Pilates and Clinical Swiss Ball therapy and has learnt, much from Physiotherapist Chris Perkins, and Chiropractor Adam Rocci.
Yoga Teacher Training Programme
Alex has developed the FlowYoga Certificate in Yogic Science, and has taught many yoga teachers at his FlowYoga school since 1998.
Anatomy and Physiology Teaching
Alex has taught anatomy, exercise physiology, yoga and related topics in both the Human Movement, and Anatomy & Human Biology Departments at UWA. He has also co-supervised several honours students in Human Movement.
Martial Arts
Alex began his martial arts training in the go-ju-kai karate system under the guidance of Brian Mackie (Shihan). He then completed the Wing Chun hand, wooden dummy and pole forms under the guidance of Rolf Claustnizter. Alex received boxing and sparing instruction from Tim Delooze. He has reached Black Belt ranking in the dynamic Choy Lay Fut (Shaolin) Kung Fu and continues his study as a dedicated student of Grand Master Vincent Cordeiro.
Triathlon
Alex has completed training as a level one triathlon coach. His most noteable triathlon acheivements include winner of the bike leg and 3rd overline in age group 2010 Hillarys triathlon; he recorded a 1hr 1min 40Km bike time trial in the 2010 City of Perth Triathlon; and completed the Busselton Half Iron Man in 5hrs and 3 min in 2011. He competes regularly in triathlon, fun run, half marathon, and cycling events.
Pose Tech Running
Alex completed the level one Pose Running coach course at the Australian Institute of Sport with Dr Nicholas Romanov.
Gymnastics
In his childhood, Alex reached level 6 in gymnastics studying under Tukka Wukka Watsui. He regularly compete achieving podium finishes in local club competitions.
Father
By far Alex’s most important achievement is fathering his son Matthew.
